Dr. Jose L. Dotres serves as Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the nation’s third-largest school district, leading more than 40,000 employees in serving approximately 350,000 students. An immigrant who arrived in Miami at age five as an English Language Learner, he is a product of Miami-Dade County Public Schools and has dedicated his career to serving the community that helped shape his future.

After beginning his career in the private sector, Dr. Dotres transitioned to education, where he has served in numerous instructional and leadership roles, including teacher, reading coach, principal, district administrator, region superintendent, assistant superintendent, Chief Academic Officer for Broward County Public Schools, Chief of Staff, Chief Human Capital Officer and Deputy Superintendent of Collier County Public Schools.

Dr. Dotres is committed to creating the conditions that support the success of every student while fostering leadership development and professional growth across the education workforce. He is recognized as a strategic leader and advocate for innovation, early literacy and educator recruitment and retention.

He has contributed to national education initiatives through the Council of the Great City Schools, co-authored several educational publications and presented to the Florida Legislature on teacher recruitment, retention and early literacy. In 2013, he was inducted into the Miami Dade College Alumni Hall of Fame.

Dr. Dotres holds a doctorate in Leadership and Innovation from St. Thomas University, an educational specialist degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Miami, a master’s degree in Reading from Barry University and a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Florida International University.
