Calvin Hughes is a nine-time Emmy Award-winning journalist and co-anchor of WPLG Local 10 News’ 4, 5, 6, 9 and 11 p.m. newscasts. During more than two decades in South Florida, he has covered many of the region’s most significant stories, including the Surfside condominium collapse, the Parkland school shooting, Hurricane Irma and the COVID-19 pandemic, along with major international reporting from Haiti and Cuba.
Hughes is recognized for his in-depth reporting and exclusive interviews with world leaders, including multiple Haitian presidents and the country’s prime minister. His documentary work has also earned national recognition, including an Emmy Award for a Juneteenth special that is syndicated to television stations across the country.
Before joining Local 10 News, Hughes worked as an anchor and reporter in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Dallas, following earlier reporting roles in Kentucky, Indiana and Missouri, where he began his broadcasting career in radio at age 19. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from the University of Missouri.
Committed to serving the community, Hughes teaches journalism as an adjunct professor at the University of Miami and supports numerous civic and nonprofit organizations throughout South Florida. He is also a dedicated mentor and community leader who remains passionate about developing the next generation of journalists.
